Every home is different, so the best way to compare options is to ask good questions. Here are ten worth asking any sober living home or group home in Cleveland, including ours.
1. Is this housing, or a treatment program?
This is the most important question to start with. Some places provide treatment or clinical services. Many sober living homes, including ACC Solutions' group homes, are housing only: a shared, substance-free home. Neither is better. What matters is knowing which one you're looking at so the person can keep or arrange the outside support they need.
2. What are the house rules?
Ask to see the rules in writing. Common topics include sobriety expectations, guests, chores, shared spaces, quiet hours, and what happens if a rule is broken. Clear rules protect everyone in the home. If the answers are vague, ask more questions.
3. Who is the home designed for?
Some homes focus on a specific group, such as veterans, men, women, or people at a certain stage of recovery. Ask who currently lives there and whether the setting fits the person you're helping. Living with peers who share similar goals can make a big difference.
4. What does it cost, and what's included?
Ask for the full monthly cost and what it covers (for example utilities, furnishings, or shared supplies). Ask how and when payment is due, and whether there are any move-in costs. Get the answers in writing so there are no surprises.
5. How does the home support outside recovery work?
A housing-only home won't provide treatment. But a good home should make room for a resident's own recovery: attending meetings, keeping counseling appointments, working with a sponsor, or using veteran services. Ask how the home's schedule and expectations work with those commitments.
6. What is expected around work, school, or daily routine?
Many homes expect residents to work, look for work, go to school, or volunteer. Ask what the expectations are and whether there's flexibility while someone is getting settled.
7. How is the home managed and maintained?
Ask who to contact when something breaks, how repairs are handled, and how house concerns get resolved. A well-kept home with responsive management makes daily life easier. ACC Solutions is a Cleveland property services company, so managing and maintaining properties is part of what we do.
8. Can a case worker or family member stay involved?
With the resident's permission, many homes are happy to keep a case worker or family member in the loop. Ask how communication works and who the main point of contact is.
9. What happens when someone is ready to move on?
The goal of transitional living is often to move toward independent housing. Ask how move-outs work, how much notice is expected, and whether the home can share tips or resources for the next step.
10. Does this feel like a place the person wants to live?
Rules and costs matter, but so does how the home feels. Is it respectful? Do residents seem to look out for each other? Is the language used by staff and residents respectful and person-first? If possible, let the person who will live there join the conversation and make the choice.
Tips for Case Workers
- Ask the same questions of every home so you can compare them fairly.
- Keep a short note on each home's rules, costs, and contact person.
- Confirm the home is clear about what it does and doesn't provide, so your client's care plan has no gaps.
Tips for Families
- Respect your loved one's role in the decision. A home works best when the resident chooses it.
- It's okay to ask direct questions. A good home will welcome them.
- Take care of yourself, too. Supporting someone in recovery can be a lot to carry.
